PAYATHAM PARUPPU MASIAL

Preparation time      : 35 min
Cooking time            : 15 min
Serve                          : 4

INGREDIENTS

·         1 cup green gram dhal
·         6 green chillies, slit sideways
·         ½ teaspoon turmeric powder
·         lemon-sized tamarind
·         small bunch coriander leaves, chopped fine
·         salt to taste

For tempering

·         2 teaspoons ghee
·         1 teaspoon mustard seeds
·         1 red chilli, halved
·         ½ teaspoon asafoetida powder
·         a few curry leaves

METHODS OF PREPARATION

·         Pressure cook the green gram dhal. Set aside.
·         Soak the tamarind in 1 cup of water and extract the juice. Set aside.
·         Heat 2 teaspoons ghee; add all the ingredients for tempering. When the mustard seeds splutter, add the green chillies, tamarind juice, turmeric powder and salt of the tamarind disappears.
·         Add the cooked dhal. Simmer till everything blends well.
·         Serve hot with rice or chapatis.
